Altona Refinery honoured with induction into the Victorian Manufacturing Hall of Fame

Mobil Altona Refinery was last night inducted into the Victorian Manufacturing Hall of Fame in recognition for its contribution to manufacturing excellence, at the 2015 Victorian Manufacturing Hall of Fame Awards Ceremony.

Altona Refinery Manager, Andrew Warrell said, “Mobil Altona Refinery is honoured to be recognised as a long-standing, top-quality Victorian manufacturer, supporting local jobs and the Victorian economy.

“Every one of the 350 people working at Altona Refinery is proud of the important contribution we make to Victoria by supplying around half of the state’s petroleum fuel needs as well as indirectly supporting thousands of local jobs.”

Altona Refinery first began operation in 1949 as a lubricants and bitumen plant. The refinery then began producing refined petroleum fuels following a major expansion that was officially opened by Prime Minister Menzies in 1955.

Although Altona Refinery is relatively older and smaller when compared to new mega-refineries in the Asia Pacific region, its unique culture and operating framework, coupled with strong industrial relations and an intense safety focus make it one of the safest and most efficient refineries in the world.

“The Altona Refinery team is proud to produce fuel for Victoria in Victoria. We look forward to continuing to stand our ground against tough competition in the region and keep on making fuel in Altona,” said Andrew.

Over the last five years, Mobil has invested $300 million in maintenance and other improvements at Altona Refinery. It’s this level of investment in strategic improvements that has seen the refinery not only stand the test of time, but be ready to embrace a bright future.

“Altona Refinery has been fuelling Victoria for 60 years and we are focused on maintaining our vital role in the local fuel supply chain and with it, our significant contribution to the Victorian economy.”

Mobil Refining Australia Pty Ltd (“Mobil”) is a subsidiary of ExxonMobil Australia Pty Ltd.
