It’s back to school for Esso’s David Anderson - Principal For A Day 2016

David Anderson, Esso Australia’s Longford Plants Manager, stepped out of his safety boots and into the classroom at Longford Primary School for the 16th annual Principal For A Day (PFAD) event on 8 September 2016.

It was a familiar experience for David to walk the halls of Longford Primary as a former student of the school.

“I recall my years at Longford Primary very fondly and to be able to go back and share some of the experiences and learnings I have had in my career is extremely gratifying,” said David.

Kiley Cunningham, Principal of Longford Primary, ensured David was put through his paces as guest Principal For A Day.

“The day provided us with an excellent opportunity to enable a local business leader to gain a unique insight into the learning environment at our school. David participated in a variety of activities such as meeting with student representatives to discuss leadership opportunities in the work place, speaking to senior students about career pathways and co-teaching a maths class on statistics and probability,” said Kiley.

“At Longford Primary School, we relish the opportunity to engage students in the marvels of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) so having David here to share real life examples of how STEM skills are used in the work place has been most beneficial for our staff and students. We are very fortunate to have the continued support of Esso through this and other programs, as it allows us to maintain a STEM program that meets the changing needs of our students in the 21st century,” added Kiley.

For Esso, inspiring future generations to think about maths and science as a career pathway is a key focus of its community investment program.

“Esso places a tremendous amount of focus on STEM education and we have a long standing tradition of investing in our local schools to play our part in fostering the next generation of STEM leaders. Participating in Principal For A Day is another opportunity for us to promote the importance of maths and science education to local students,” added David.

Principal For A Day is delivered by the Australian Council for Educational Research (ACER) in partnership with the Victorian Department of Education and Training (through the Bastow Institute of Educational Leadership).

Principal For A Day gives a wide range of community and business leaders from all walks of life a first-hand experience of a normal day in a Victorian government school. Over 150 business and community leaders will take part this year.
